Episode 1

Stand-up comedian Mae (Martin) is stuck in a rut: she’s single, in recovery from a drug addiction and sleeping on a friend’s sofa. The jokes may be landing, but her life isn’t. When she meets the magnetic but previously heterosexual George (Ritchie), it doesn’t seem possible that George could be interested in her: George is like Princess Diana, while Mae resembles a kernel of corn… Nevertheless, the pair embark on a whirlwind romance, moving in together and triggering events that will change both their lives forever.

Episode 2

Mae (Mae Martin) and George (Charlotte Ritchie) are so loved-up they haven’t spent a moment apart since they met. But when George goes away to a wedding, Mae realises that she’s forgotten how to be on her own. As her intense separation anxiety spirals out of control, Mae turns to her new sponsor, Maggie (Sophie Thompson), for support. While her old addictive behaviours threaten to drag Mae under, George has her own problems: she hasn’t told anyone that she’s in a relationship with a woman, and none of her friends even know that Mae exists.

Episode 3

George’s (Charlotte Ritchie) reluctance to tell her friends about Mae (Mae Martin) is taking its toll on their sex life – and Mae tells George that this won’t change until she comes out. But can George do the one thing that scares her the most? Meanwhile, when Mae mentions her problems during her stand-up routine, she gets an offer that’s difficult to turn down.

Episode 4

Mae (Mae Martin) finds out that her parents (Lisa Kudrow and Adrian Lukis) are visiting the UK but haven’t thought to tell her. They’re in Blackpool, scattering the cat’s ashes. An incensed Mae hotfoots it to the North to join them, taking George (Charlotte Ritchie) with her for moral support. Now that she’s regularly attending her drugs support group, Mae wants to apologise to her mum and dad for her past transgressions as an addict. But if she’s expecting anything in return, she’s going to have a long wait…

Episode 5

The arrival of Noughties heart-throb Arnie Rivers (Barry Ward) at the comedy club further knocks Mae’s (Mae Martin) confidence in her faltering relationship, as it turns out that George (Charlotte Ritchie) had posters of him on her bedroom wall as a teenager. When Arnie encourages Mae to be as honest as possible on stage, it catapults her career into the big time – but simultaneously collapses her relationship with George.
